Symptoms of ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can manifest with a variety of symptoms, which are typically classified into two main categories: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. Not everyone with ADHD will display all symptoms, and the severity of symptoms can vary greatly among individuals. Here are some common symptoms associated with ADHD:

Inattention symptoms:

  • Difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities
  • Easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
  • Forgetfulness in daily activities
  • Difficulty organizing tasks and activities
  • Avoidance or reluctance to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort
  • Frequently losing items necessary for tasks
  • Difficulty following through on instructions or completing tasks
  • Making careless mistakes in schoolwork or other activities
  • Difficulty listening attentively to others

Hyperactivity/Impulsivity symptoms:

  • Fidgeting or tapping hands or feet when seated
  • Inability to remain seated in situations where it's expected (e.g., classroom, workplace)
  • Excessive running or climbing in
  • Difficulty engaging in activities quietly
  • Talks excessively
  • Blurting out answers before questions have been completed
  • Difficulty waiting for one's turn in conversations or games
  • Interrupting or intruding on others' conversations or activities

It's important to note that these symptoms must be present to a significant degree, causing impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning, and must not be better explained by another mental disorder. Additionally, symptoms must have been present before the age of 12 and in more than one setting (e.g., at home, school, work) for a diagnosis of ADHD to be made. It's also common for individuals with ADHD to experience comorbid conditions such as anxiety, depression, or learning disorders
